Shibazakura Takakami Park, located in Takakami Town, Monbetsu District, Hokkaido, is a stunning park famous for its vast colonies of moss phlox (Shibazakura). From early to late May, approximately 100,000 square meters of land is blanketed in vibrant pink blossoms. The history of this park dates back to 1957, when the first small batch of moss phlox was planted. Through the dedicated efforts of the local community over many decades, it has grown into one of Japan's most impressive floral landscapes. The park was even honored with the 'Flower Tourism Destination Grand Prize,' highlighting its beauty and the sweet, refreshing scent of the surrounding flora.
The journey of this park began in 1957 with a single crate of moss phlox seedlings. For over 50 years, local residents have nurtured and expanded the greenery, transforming it into the massive landscape seen today. Takakami Town is also renowned as a leading producer of Japanese mint (hakka). This heritage is reflected in the 'Scent of Fragrance Herb Garden,' a 4-hectare area within the park. The combination of local botanical culture and dedicated gardening has created a unique destination where visitors can experience both visual beauty and aromatic delights.
The most iconic sight is the endless pink carpet of moss phlox that stretches toward the horizon. During the peak bloom, the air is filled with a delicate, sweet fragrance. For a truly spectacular perspective, visitors can experience helicopter sightseeing tours during the Shibazakura Festival, offering a bird's-eye view of the massive floral expanse. The peak season for the moss phlox is the one-month window from early to late May. The 'Shibazakura Festival' is held during this time to celebrate the blooms. If you wish to see the landscape from above, the helicopter tours provide a perspective that ground-level viewing cannot match. The park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
