Shibata Castle is a flatland castle located in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. Unlike typical mountain castles, it was built on flat terrain to serve as a center for politics and economy, prioritizing ease of transport and accessibility. The most striking feature is the "Namako-kabe" (sea cucumber walls), which create a beautiful black-and-white contrast. The stone walls are also a marvel, constructed using the "Kirikomi-hagi" technique, where stones are precisely fitted together without gaps, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Surrounded by the waters of the Shibata River, the castle's structure—protected by moats and stone walls—offers a deeply historical and scenic atmosphere.
The castle once featured a grand structure consisting of the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sanmaru enclosures, with 11 turrets and 5 gates. A rare feature is the "San-kai Yagura" (three-story turret), which was designed to house three Shachihoko (mythical tiger-headed carp) ornaments—a rarity in Japan. The three-story turret and Tatsumi Yagura were reconstructed in 2004. Additionally, the statue of Yasube Horibe, a key figure in the famous Akō Roshi (47 Ronin) incident, stands before the main gate, serving as a symbol of the local history.
The charm of Shibata Castle lies in its reconstructed three-story turret and the precision of its stone walls. The castle park is dotted with historical buildings and exhibits where you can observe traditional castle architecture. The statue of Yasube Horibe is an essential stop for history enthusiasts. Furthermore, the park offers beautiful seasonal landscapes, such as vibrant flower beds featuring purple and white irises, creating a harmonious blend of nature and history.
Shibata Castle offers different views throughout the seasons. In spring, the area is adorned with beautiful cherry blossoms. In winter, you can witness the dramatic sight of the castle covered in snow. The castle grounds are open from April to November; please note that the interior is closed from December to March (though the exterior can still be viewed). The standard opening hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closing at 4:30 PM in November). Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and stone walls.
