Shiawase no Kaidan (Stairway to Happiness) is a breathtaking architectural feature located along the coast of Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. The design creates a visual illusion where the boundary between the blue sea and the sky seems to disappear. As part of the 'Shiawase Garden' resort, the stairs are positioned at an elevation of over 50 meters above sea level, providing a sense of floating above the Seto Inland Sea. The location offers a seamless connection between the sky and the ocean, making it a truly magical destination.
While not a historical monument, this facility is a centerpiece of the modern 'Shiawase Garden' resort development. The concept is built around the idea of a 'photogenic experience,' designed to offer visitors a sense of escape from daily life. The site features themed elements such as stone-paved tracks and the 'Shiawase Station' (Happiness Station), creating a whimsical, resort-style atmosphere that celebrates happiness and relaxation.
The most iconic feature is the 'Stairway to Happiness,' which gives visitors the sensation of walking through the sky. Ascending these stairs reveals a stunning panorama of the Seto Inland Sea. At the top, you will find the 'Shiawase Station' area, decorated with a charming stone-paved railway design. The seaside terrace, situated over 50 meters above the water, is equipped with comfortable cushions, allowing you to relax while gazing at the horizon. Other themed photo spots include the 'Shiawase Bell' and 'Shiawase Chair,' all designed to capture beautiful moments.
The facility is open year-round, but the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In summer, the contrast between the deep blue sea and the bright sky is particularly striking. The area near Ozaki Cape is also an excellent spot for viewing spectacular sunsets in the late afternoon. Please note that operating hours may vary between weekdays and weekends/holidays, so it is recommended to check the schedule before your visit.
Visitors can enjoy photography against the stunning backdrop or relax at the onsite cafe. 'Shiawase Pancake Awaji Island Terrace' offers a variety of delicious menu items and takeout options. The facility is also highly dog-friendly, featuring private rooms, a dog run, and dedicated dog toilets, making it a perfect destination for travelers with pets. Other areas within the resort include a scenic swing and a pier for further exploration.
Located within the 'Shiawase Garden' complex, the area around the cafe and the stairs includes a seaside children's playground, a cape, and a pier. For those traveling by car, the site is conveniently located just a few minutes from the Kita-Awaji IC on the Kobe Awajishima Naruto Expressway, making it an ideal hub for exploring Awaji Island.
Since the site includes stairs, terraces, and various outdoor walking areas, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. For payments at the cafe and other facilities, cash, major credit cards, and various Japanese transportation IC cards are accepted. While reservations are not always mandatory, it is recommended to check ahead if you plan to use the cafe services. If you are traveling with a pet, please follow all etiquette and use the designated dog areas.
