Setoai Gorge is a magnificent canyon located upstream of the Kinu River in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, where the beauty of natural geological formations is concentrated. Formed by the erosion of tuff rock, the area is characterized by its dramatic, steep cliffs. As part of Nikko National Park, it has been selected as one of the "100 Best Scenic Views of Tochigi." The area holds a unique history, with legends of Heike refugees once inhabiting the settlements here. However, with the construction of the Kawamata Dam, the original villages were submerged, and the landscape underwent a significant transformation. Today, the area has been developed into a modern scenic destination that embraces this change. While the water levels once fluctuated due to dam management, the commencement of water discharge in 2004 restored the lush, flowing waters and the breathtaking beauty of the gorge. Additionally, the suspension bridge—once used for dam maintenance—has been repurposed as the "Watarassai Suspension Bridge," blending historical context with modern tourism.
The ultimate highlight is the view from the "Watarassai Suspension Bridge," which spans the area directly in front of the Kawamata Dam. The contrast between the sheer cliffs rising above you and the river flowing below is truly awe-inspiring. Crossing the bridge allows you to feel the immense scale of nature. The surrounding area features well-maintained walking paths, allowing you to enjoy the geological beauty of the canyon from multiple angles. The scenery changes beautifully with every season, particularly during the autumn foliage season, when the surrounding mountains turn into a vibrant tapestry of color, transforming the entire gorge into a work of art.
Setoai Gorge offers different charms throughout the year, but the autumn foliage season (around September to November) is highly recommended. The season of fresh greenery (around May to June) is also beautiful and ideal for hiking. Please note that the walking paths are closed during the winter season (from late November to late April), so be sure to check the schedule before visiting. During the daytime, sunlight hitting the water and rock faces creates a sparkling, beautiful effect, making it an excellent time for photography.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing "nature walk" through the scenery. Walking along the paths while listening to the sound of the water and feeling the presence of the cliffs offers a sense of healing that is hard to find in the city. Along the way, you can also visit the Dam Museum to learn about the coexistence of nature and engineering technology. While not a rigorous mountain climb, the experience of trekking while observing natural formations up close is a major draw.
The nearby areas include famous hot spring destinations such as Kawamata Onsen and Yunishigawa Onsen. A perfect travel route is to visit these hot springs to soothe your fatigue after exploring the gorge. Since it is easily accessible from major sightseeing spots in Nikko, it is a great addition to a standard Nikko itinerary. The area is also very popular as a scenic driving route due to its rich natural environment.
Comfortable walking shoes (sneakers or hiking shoes) are essential for your visit. Although the paths are maintained, they can be damp or slippery due to the natural environment, so please proceed with caution. Regarding payments, cash may be required for the Dam Museum or nearby facilities. While some English signage is available, detailed English support from staff may be limited, so it is helpful to be prepared. To protect the environment, please follow local etiquette, such as taking your trash home and not picking any plants.
