Sesoko Beach is located on Sesoko Island in Motobu Town, Okinawa Prefecture. This area is characterized by a unique landscape of Ryukyu limestone formed by uplifted coral reefs, surrounded by incredibly clear ocean waters. The swimming area spans approximately 120m in width and 80m in depth. For your peace of mind, certified lifeguards and monitors are stationed on-site, ensuring a safe environment for families and solo travelers to enjoy the sea. It is an ideal spot for both high-energy marine sports and relaxing under the sun.
Sesoko Island has a deep history dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Historically, the island was also known as "Shishi-jima" or "Suko-jima." The area is rich in archaeological heritage, featuring prehistoric shell mounds and the ruins of Sesoko Gusuku (castle), which provides a glimpse into the ancient history of the Ryukyu people. The island maintains a traditional lifestyle, with central settlements and agricultural lands preserved. Furthermore, the island is a site for scientific study, housing research facilities for the University of the Ryukyus Tropical Biosphere Research Center, highlighting its significant ecological value.
The greatest draw of Sesoko Beach is the breathtaking contrast between the brilliant white sand and the crystal-clear ocean. The water displays a stunning gradient of blues depending on the depth and light. The island itself is a low-lying plateau shaped somewhat like a pear, surrounded by a beautiful coastline. Visitors can also observe a diverse tropical flora, including Ryukyu Pines, Fukugi trees, Banyan trees, and Ficus, which create a lush, tropical atmosphere.
The official swimming season typically runs from March 7th to November 30th. Standard swimming hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During the summer months (April to September), the sunlight is exceptionally strong, making it the best time to witness the most vivid blue hues of the ocean and sky. Please note that during typhoon season, operating hours may change or the beach may be temporarily closed for safety; we recommend checking local conditions before your visit.
You can enjoy a wide variety of marine activities at the beach. Through the Sesoko Beach Marine Counter, various plans are available, including parasailing, banana boat rides, and snorkeling. For example, combo sets that combine parasailing with snorkeling or banana boats are popular for those seeking a dynamic ocean experience. These activities allow you to feel the power and beauty of Okinawa's nature up close.
Sesoko Beach is a convenient base for exploring northern Okinawa. It is located about a 90-minute drive from Naha Airport. To reach the nearest parking area easily, you can enter the phone number for the "Sesoko Beach Management Office" (0980-47-2368) into your car navigation system. The surrounding area is characterized by scenic bridges and the tranquil, natural landscapes of the island.
The beach facilities include flushable toilets, changing rooms (free of charge), hot showers (500 JPY per use), and lockers (300 JPY per use). Please be careful with your valuables, as lost items are only held for 2 weeks before being disposed of. Regarding parking, the fee is 1,000 JPY per car per day (the first 10 minutes are free, and stays up to 1 hour are 500 JPY). While motorcycles are not permitted in the car parking area, there is free parking available for bicycles within the swimming hours. Please refrain from street parking, as it obstructs emergency vehicles.
