Senshu Park is a beautiful historical park developed on the site of Kubota Castle, which once served as the seat of the Akita Clan. It preserves the legacy of the Satake clan, who ruled the Akita domain for 267 years from 1602 to 1869. Characterized as a flatland mountain castle (hirayama-jō), the park features historic stone walls and architecture, serving as both a vital cultural heritage site and a beloved relaxation spot for Akita residents. Today, it offers a harmonious blend of history and nature within a beautifully designed modern park setting.
The history of this site began with the construction of the castle by the first lord of the Akota domain, Satake Yoshinobu. Despite being a flatland castle without a central keep, it possessed a robust structure surrounded by deep moats. In the Meiji era, the area was developed into a park through the design of Yasuhira Nagaoka, a pioneer of modern park design. The name 'Senshu Park' was chosen to include the character for 'thousand' (sen) alongside 'autumn' (aki), symbolizing a wish for the region's prosperity to last for a thousand years. This site is a profound cultural asset where the history of the ruling lords meets modern park development.
The park is dotted with numerous structures and ruins that evoke a sense of history. A standout feature is the 'Kubota Castle Omote-mon' (Main Gate), a heavy wooden structure that exemplifies traditional Japanese architectural style. Another essential site is the reconstructed 'Osumi Yagura' (Watchtower), built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city.
