The Togariishi Stone Age Site is a significant archaeological site located in Chino, Nagano Prefecture, representing a circular settlement from the middle of the Jomon period. Designated as a Special National Historic Site, it serves as a vital center for understanding Jomon culture, especially when paired with the adjacent Togariishi Jomon Museum. History & Cultural Background

This site is renowned as a settlement from the middle Jomon period. Archaeological surveys have identified over 200 pit-dwelling sites in the area. The name is derived from the 'Togariishi'—a large, pyramid-shaped stone located to the south of the site. The region's development was supported by an abundance of natural resources, including flora, fauna, water, and obsidian, which was a crucial material for stone tools. Together with the Yosuke-one Ridge site, it stands as a key location for studying the social structures of the Jomon era.

Key Attractions

The centerpiece of the collection is the National Treasure clay figurine housed at the Togariishi Jomon Museum. The museum displays over 2,000 artifacts, including the famous 'Venus of Togariishi' (National Treasure No. 1) and the 'Masked Goddess' designated in 2014, alongside various pottery and obsidian tools. In the historic park, visitors can also explore several reconstructed pit-dwellings at the Yosuke-one site, providing a vivid glimpse into ancient daily life.

The museum operates from 9:00 to 17:00, with the last entry at 16:30. For the best experience, we recommend visiting the park and reconstructed dwellings during daylight hours. While the surrounding scenery changes with the seasons, planning your visit around the museum's exhibition schedule is highly recommended.

The Togariishi Jomon Museum offers hands-on cultural programs, such as crafting clay items like clay flutes, bells, or pottery. Additionally, visitors can participate in the 'Sasa-buki' experience at Sasariyumi, where you can learn to thatch a roof with fresh bamboo leaves. These programs offer a deeper connection to Jomon-era craftsmanship. Please check with the staff regarding availability and any necessary preparations.

Surrounding Area

The site is nestled in the beautiful natural environment at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. Nearby, you can explore the Suwa Grand Shrine (including the Kamisha Honmiya), one of Japan's oldest and most significant shrines, which is part of a historic pilgrimage route. Other Jomon-related sites, such as the Nakatsuhara Jomon Park, are also located in the vicinity.

Admission fees for the museum are 500 JPY for adults, 300 JPY for high school students, and 200 JPY for elementary and junior high school students.
