Sengan-kei is a stunning gorge located in the Kamiichi Town area of Nakaniikawa District, Toyama Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of 160m, this narrow valley spans approximately 200m in width. Due to the high density of waterfalls, it is also affectionately known as the "Hundred Waterfalls Gorge." The most striking feature of Sengan-kei is the nearly complete covering of its rocks and cliffs with bryophytes (mosses). This unique environment has been officially recognized as one of Japan's "Precious Moss Forests," representing a quintessential low-altitude valley landscape of Toyama.
The area is a site of dedicated environmental conservation. In August 2018, the Japan Moss Society selected this location as one of the "Precious Moss Forests of Japan." This distinction was awarded because the ecosystem—where rocks, cliffs, and tree trunks are blanketed by numerous epiphytic species and mosses—is exceptionally rare and valuable. Furthermore, the area has received the Toyama Prefecture Uruoi Landscape Award (Landscape Category) for its excellence in preserving and presenting a beautiful natural landscape, establishing its status as a significant local natural heritage site.
The scenery of Sengan-kei is sustained by an abundant water supply and a highly humid environment. A diverse array of mosses grows on the cliffs and stones, creating a powerful and immersive natural spectacle. The sight of the rugged rocks and cliffs draped in deep green moss is a view unique to this location. Visitors can observe a wide variety of plant life, making the richness of the local ecosystem visually striking and easy to appreciate.
Sengan-kei reveals a different face with every season. The landscape is particularly vibrant during periods of high water volume or when plant growth is most active. For your stroll, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. While there are maintained paths, the terrain is natural and requires careful footing.
