Senkoji Park is a highlight of Onomichi tourism, stretching from the summit of Mt. Senkoji in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. With a history dating back to 1894, it is a highly renowned destination, recognized as one of the '100 Best Night Views in Japan' and one of the '100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan.' The park's primary charm lies in its elevated vantage point, offering a sweeping view of the calm Seto Inland Sea and the iconic hillside streets of Onomichi.
The origins of the park date back to the Meiji era. In 1894, the head priest of Senko-ji Temple provided the land to create a space for both pilgrims and local recreation, originally known as 'Kyorakuen.' Over the years, the site evolved into the park we know today, serving as a cherished retreat for locals and tourists alike while preserving the historic landscape of Onomichi. Most recently, in 2022, the observation facilities were renovated to provide an even more comfortable environment for visitors to enjoy the scenery.
The park features two distinct observation areas:
First is the 'Summit Observatory (Nickname: PEAK)' located at the top. This facility, renovated in 2022, is a striking structure approximately 63 meters long and 3.6 meters wide, designed to provide a seamless 360-degree panoramic view. It is also designed with accessibility in mind, featuring loop-style stairs and elevators.
Second is the 'Senkoji Park Observation Point (Nickname: MiTeMi)' located at the western end of the park. This area utilizes the second floor of the former 'Onomichi Castle' museum site and includes benches, allowing visitors to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
Additionally, the 'Cherry Blossom Avenue' is a major highlight in spring, featuring about 1,500 cherry trees. Another unique feature is the 'White Carpet Hill,' a flowerbed of Chrysanthemum flowers maintained with the cooperation of local agricultural groups, offering beautiful seasonal colors.

The cherry blossom season is truly spectacular, with thousands of Somei Yoshino trees in full bloom. This is a peak season for many tourists, making it a wonderful time for a scenic stroll.

As one of the '100 Best Night Views in Japan,' the evening scenery is exceptional. From the observation decks, you can witness the beautiful contrast between the illuminated cityscape and the dark expanse of the Seto Inland Sea. Many areas are accessible 24 hours a day and are free of charge.
Visitors primarily enjoy walking through the park while taking in the high-altitude views. You can experience the nostalgic atmosphere of Onomichi while walking along the 'Literature Path.' The park also houses the Onomichi City Museum of Art, where you can connect with local culture and view works by artists like Kazusaku Kobayashi.
The area surrounding the park is filled with essential Onomichi landmarks. You can use the Senkoji Mountain Ropeway to travel smoothly from the foot of the mountain to the summit. The surrounding streets are filled with literary-themed slopes, historic temples, and charming cafes, making it a popular route to explore on foot after your visit to the park.
