Guide
Senjojiki is a beautiful plateau and grassland located in Hioki-chu, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, at an elevation of 333m (approx. 1,096 ft). Spanning a vast area of about 26,400 square meters, the plateau overlooks the Sea of Japan to the north. It is a renowned scenic spot where visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the sea and sky, with various islands visible in the distance. The landscape is also dotted with several wind turbines, adding a unique modern touch to the natural scenery.
Due to its vast and majestic landscape, this location has a history of being used as a filming location for Ford automobile commercials and photographic posters. Today, it serves as both a popular natural scenic spot and a destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The area is also well-known for hosting the "Kankan Festa in Senjojiki," an annual mountain bike endurance race held during the summer months.

The primary draw of Senjojiki is the spectacular view of the Sea of Japan from the high ground. You can gaze out toward the islands of Haguroshima and Mishima, which change their appearance beautifully depending on the season and time of day. A particularly magical sight is the sight of fishing lights (isobunari) floating on the sea during summer nights. For a relaxing experience, there is a park and a cafe called "Country Kitchen" located on the plateau, where you can enjoy the view while taking a break.
The most pleasant time to visit is from May to September. In the summer, you can observe the glowing fishing lights at night, and during sunrise, you can witness the sun rising directly from the horizon. If you plan to use the campsite, please note that staying past 6:00 PM is considered an overnight stay; if you are planning a day camp (day use), please confirm the time limits.
Senjojiki offers a wonderful opportunity for camping in the heart of nature. The campsite features numerous free sites and is equipped for BBQ (barbecue) activities. While the area hosts mountain bike events, please be aware that mountain biking is strictly prohibited on the walking paths, which are designated for pedestrians only.
Nearby attractions include the famous Motonosumi Shrine. For a relaxing break, the "Country Kitchen" cafe on the plateau offers great views. We recommend checking the information for nearby facilities and amenities before your visit to ensure a smooth trip.
Since Senjojiki is located on a high plateau at 333m, it can become quite windy. We recommend bringing clothing that can protect you from the wind. The campsite operates on a self-service system: please fill out the application form, place the form and your cash into a transparent bag, and drop it into the designated fee box. Please note that payments at the campsite must be made in cash. If you are bringing pets, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Additionally, please respect the rules by not riding mountain bikes on the pedestrian walking paths.
