Senjojiki Cirque is a magnificent glacial cirque (kar) located directly beneath Mt. Hoken in the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains), spanning the border between Komagane City and Miyata Village in Nagano Prefecture. From Senjojiki Station at an altitude of 2,612m, a vast and dramatic glacial landscape unfolds before your eyes. The scenery undergoes stunning seasonal transformations: vibrant alpine flowers bloom in the summer, and the landscape turns to a brilliant gold in the autumn.
The terrain of Senjoj-iki Cirque was sculpted by glacial erosion, forming a classic mountain cirque. This region is part of a landscape shaped by ancient glacial processes, similar to the nearby Nokogai-ike Cirque. Scientific research, including Beryllium-10 (10Be) analysis, has been used to study the geological formation of this area, suggesting it was shaped during the last glacial period.
The greatest draw of Senjojiki Cirque is its incredible variety of alpine flora. In summer, you can witness massive clusters of plants such as Japanese Buttercup (Shinano-kinbai), Aleutian Avens (Chinguruma), and various species of Lilium and Larch. The upper meadows are particularly famous for their dense patches of Shinano-kinbai. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic stroll along well-maintained walking paths to observe the surrounding rocky cliffs and the majestic silhouette of Mt. Hoken. A complete loop of the walking path takes approximately 45 minutes.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Summer features lush green meadows filled with colorful alpine flowers, while autumn brings a breathtaking display of golden foliage and red hues. In winter (from December onwards), the landscape is transformed into a pristine, pure white wonderland of snow. Please note that winter visits require extreme caution due to the high risk of avalanches in this terrain.
Enjoy the unique high-altitude environment through easy trekking. Near Senjojiki Station, you can relax at facilities like "2612 Café & Restaurant," which features large windows for viewing the Central Alps, or "SO・RA・TO・KI," which offers a relaxing terrace. These spots are perfect for resting while soaking in the view. Additionally, during the spring season (mid-April to late May), the area is sometimes utilized as a ski area with T-bar lifts.
Access to Senjojiki Cirque is typically via a combination of bus and ropeway from the Sugadai Bus Center. The surrounding area serves as a base for both serious mountaineers and sightseers, with various lounges offering panoramic views of the Southern Alps and Komagane City.
As this is a high-altitude environment, please wear sturdy walking shoes or trekking shoes. Temperatures drop significantly in the morning and evening, so it is highly recommended to bring extra warm layers (windbreakers or down jackets). When taking photographs, please step to the side of the path to ensure you do not obstruct other visitors. If you plan to engage in serious mountaineering, ensure you have proper climbing gear and have submitted a mountain climbing plan.
