Sengokuhara Susuki Grassland is a vast expanse of silver grass located in Sengokuhara, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. Situated at the foot of Mt. Daigatake, this area is highly regarded as one of the "50 Scenic Views of Kanagawa" and one of the "100 Best Flower Spots in Kanagawa." It is a premier destination for nature lovers, especially during the autumn season when the landscape transforms into a breathtaking, shimmering golden panorama of swaying silver grass.
Maintaining this beautiful landscape requires careful, periodic management. In the past, without regular maintenance, trees would encroach upon the grassland, turning it into a forest. To prevent this, the traditional practice of "yamayaki" (controlled mountain burning) was reinstated in 1990. Every year in March, on a calm, windless day, this controlled burn is conducted to preserve the natural ecosystem and restore the beautiful, open grassland that defines the area's identity.
The most spectacular sight is the dense thicket of silver grass covering the slopes of Mt. Daigatake. Well-maintained paths allow visitors to walk directly through the heart of the grass, feeling completely surrounded by nature. During the autumn season, the way the sunlight reflects off the silver grass creates a dazzling, luminous effect. Additionally, witnessing the annual March mountain burning provides a unique insight into the powerful cycles of nature and land management.
The most iconic scenery occurs from September to November. During these months, the silver grass turns a brilliant golden hue, creating a vast, glowing landscape. While there are no official opening hours as it is a natural area, autumn is the most popular time for photography and sightseeing. Visiting in March also offers a chance to see the traditional mountain-burning process used to maintain the ecosystem.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the established paths that wind through the silver grass. The area provides an immersive experience of the local topography and vegetation. The surrounding Sengokuhara area is also home to various art museums, hot spring facilities, and luxury accommodations, making it easy to combine a nature walk with a broader Hakone sightseeing itinerary.
The Sengokuhara area offers many opportunities to engage with nature and culture. Nearby attractions include the Hakone Visitor Center, where you can learn about local natural systems, and the Hakone Wetland Gardens, perfect for observing plant ecosystems. Art enthusiasts can visit the Hakone Lalique Museum or the Glass Forest. The area is also well-served by numerous hot spring inns (ryokan), hotels, and restaurants, making it an ideal base for your stay.
As you will be walking through a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable, active clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Please be mindful of your footing, as some parts of the path may be uneven. Note that the edges of the silver grass can be sharp.
