Sendai Castle Ruins (Aoba Castle) served as the administrative center of the Sendai Domain, established by the legendary Sengoku-period hero, Date Masamune. Today, it is affectionately known as "Aoba Castle" and remains a premier historical landmark of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. The vast grounds feature impressive stone walls that speak to the scale of the original fortress, and the iconic equestrian statue of Date Masamote, the symbol of Sendai, stands proudly at the Honmaru (inner bailey) site. Because the site is situated on a high plateau, it offers an expansive view of the surrounding landscape, making it a perfect spot to observe the layout of the modern Sendai cityscape.
Construction of Sendai Castle began during the Keicho era by Date Masamune. The castle was completed during the reign of the second lord, Date Tadamune, and served as the seat of the Date clan for approximately 270 years. Despite suffering damage from earthquakes and wars, the site has undergone various reconstructions over the centuries. While many structures were lost due to the abolition of castle systems during the Meiji Restoration and the air raids during World War II, the historical essence remains through the surviving stone walls and the Honmaru ruins. This site is not just a tourist destination but a vital historical landmark that represents the prosperity and evolution of the Sendai Domain.
The most striking feature is the "Date Masamune Equestrian Statue" located at the Honmaru site. This statue, set upon a high pedestal, is a true icon of Sendai. Additionally, the observation area at the Honmaru site provides a panoramic view of the Sendai metropolitan area, allowing visitors to see the natural topography and urban layout. Other points of interest include the weathered stone walls that showcase the castle's defensive structure and various areas filled with historical charm. The grounds also include nearby facilities such as the Miyagi Prefectural Kokubunji Shrine, allowing for a comprehensive historical circuit.

Since the site is open 24 hours, visitors can enjoy the bright daylight or visit in the evening to witness the changing colors of the sky and the twinkling lights of the city below.

The castle ruins are located relatively close to the center of Sendai. The surrounding neighborhood features various facilities for learning about local culture and several restaurants serving local delicacies. Access is convenient via the "Loople Sendai" sightseeing bus, which connects the site to other major landmarks and integrates easily with the subway system.
As the site is located on a high plateau, there are some slopes and stairs. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
