Senbonhama is a beautiful coastal area located in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture. It covers the eastern end of the Fuji Coast, stretching approximately 19km from the vicinity of Numazu Port to the mouth of the Fuji River. The area is characterized by the 'Senbonmatsubara'—a lush pine forest—and a long sea wall designed for coastal protection. This sea wall now serves as an extensive promenade, offering a wonderful space for walking, jogging, and enjoying unobstructed views of the ocean.
The coastline has been developed with a focus on both natural preservation and disaster prevention. The sea walls were constructed to protect the area from tsunamis and high tides. While the area was once famous for the 'Sunset Pageant' fireworks display held in late August, that event was discontinued in 2011. Today, the area is beloved as a quintessential Numazu landscape where natural beauty and man-made structures coexist harmoniously.
The most striking feature of Senbonhama is the long sea wall paired with the dense pine forest behind it. The top of the sea wall is a well-maintained promenade, providing a perfect vantage point for viewing the vast Suruga Bay. During the summer, the area becomes a lively destination as the 'Senbonhama Beach' opens for swimming. The combination of the gentle waves and the greenery of the pine groves offers a peaceful retreat for visitors.
The most vibrant time to visit is during the summer (July and August) when the beach is open for swimming and seaside activities. However, the promenade is a popular spot for walking and running year-round. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to see the striking contrast between the blue sea and sky, or arrive in the late afternoon to witness a breathtaking sunset over Suruga Bay.
Visitors can enjoy various low-key activities that embrace the coastal environment. The promenade is a regular route for locals to jog and walk. Additionally, the area occasionally hosts local events, such as marathon races in mid-October. Whether you are looking for a refreshing walk or a quiet moment of nature observation, Senbonhama is an ideal destination.
Just a short distance from Senbonhama is Numazu Port, one of the region's most important fishing hubs. It is a common practice for travelers to visit the port to enjoy fresh seafood before or after exploring the coast. The coastline continues toward the Fuji River estuary, offering a scenic route for further exploration.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for the promenade. If you plan to enjoy the beach in summer, please bring swimwear, sandals, and a change of clothes.
