Senba Toshogu Shrine is a shrine located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, featuring a shrine building designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This site is historically significant as the place where the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu temporarily rested before being transferred to Nikko. The shrine carries the legacy of the great Buddhist rites led by the monk Tenkai, serving as a precious cultural heritage that preserves the architectural styles of the early Edo period.
In 1616, after Tokugawa Ieyasu passed away at Sunpu Castle, his remains were initially laid to rest at Kannon-ji. For four days until his final transfer to Nikko in 1617, his remains stayed at Kitain Temple. It was during this time that the monk Tenkai presided over the great memorial services. Due to this historical sequence, the Toshogu shrine was established within the grounds.
The original shrine building was constructed in 1633, but it was destroyed by the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1638. Following the destruction, the shrine was rebuilt under the orders of Tokugawa Iemitsu, with Horita Masamori, the lord of the Kawagoe Domain, serving as the official in charge. The current shrine building was completed in 1640.
The architecture of the shrine is remarkable. The main hall follows the Sankensha Nagare-zukuri style and features a beautiful copper-tiled roof. The surrounding fence (mizugaki) extends 30 ken in length and is also tiled, with a Hirakaramon gate positioned at the center front. The worship hall (haiden) is a single-story Irimoya-zukuri style structure, characterized by copper-tiled roofs on both the front porch and the rear shrine area. These structures showcase the exquisite craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the early Edo period.

Senba Toshogu Shrine is situated within the historical district of Kawagoe. The surrounding area features Kitain Temple—another site closely linked to Tokugawa Ieyasu—and the charming traditional streets of Kawagoe, making this an excellent starting point for a historical walking tour.
