Sekizo-ji is a prestigious Sodo Zen temple located in Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture. While its origins are said to date back to 655, the temple was revitalized in 1648. The temple grounds are a masterpiece of spiritual and natural harmony, featuring traditional gardens that embody Japanese aesthetics and a massive rock formation (Iwakura) that stands as a testament to nature's power. The temple boasts an ancient lineage, with its foundation traditionally dated to 655. It was later rebuilt and revitalized in 1648 as a center for the Sodo Zen sect. The most striking feature of Sekizo-ji is the 'Shishin-sosho Garden.' This garden is attributed to the legendary garden designer Mirei Shigemori and is designed around the concept of the Four Guardian Deities: Seiryu (Azure Dragon), Byakko (White Tiger), Suzaku (Vermilion Bird), and Genbu (Black Tortoise). Additionally, the mountain behind the temple features a colossal rock formation (Iwakura) measuring 12m in height and 20m in width, offering a breathtaking display of natural strength. Visitors can admire the intricate patterns of the karesansui (dry landscape) gardens, where raked sand, natural stones, and moss create a serene, meditative landscape.
