Sekiya Ichigen-ya Nature Park is a sprawling 14.34-hectare wetland located at the southern foot of Mt. Kurikoma in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. The name "Sekiya" refers to a wide wetland area. The terrain is characterized by a long, narrow shape situated between elevations of approximately 669 and 707 meters. The ecosystem is built upon a thick layer of peat (about 1.3 meters deep) and sphagnum moss, which supports a diverse variety of alpine plants. The area is divided into eight distinct wetlands across four groups (Upper, Middle, and Lower sections), separated by lush primeval beech forests.
Positioned on the gentle southern slopes of Mt. Kurikoma, this area plays a vital role in local nature conservation. The wetland has maintained a unique and delicate ecosystem over many years, thanks to the deep peat and moss layers. It is recognized as a significant scenic spot and a symbol of the region's natural heritage, serving as a vital habitat for various high-altitude plant species.
The greatest draw is the seasonal transformation of the alpine flora. In late June, the wetland is famously blanketed in a sea of orange as the Nikko-kisage (Daylilies) reach full bloom—a sight famous throughout Japan. From May to September, a rotating cast of flowers such as Mizubasho (Skunk Cabbage), Rengetutsuji (Japanese Andromeda), and Ezo-oyamarindoku (Gentian) grace the landscape. Visitors can observe these botanical wonders up close while walking along the scenic boardwalks that weave through the primeval beech forests.

Nature observation is the primary activity. The trails are well-maintained for a safe experience. From the parking area, it is approximately 0.5 km (about a 15-minute walk) to the First Wetland, and about 1.2 km (about a 25-minute walk) to the Second Wetland. Please stay on the designated boardwalks at all times to protect the delicate ecosystem; stepping off the path is strictly prohibited to preserve the plants and peat layers.
The area around Mt. Kurikoma offers a wealth of outdoor activities. There are various hiking trails and nature observation spots nearby, making it an ideal destination for trekkers and nature enthusiasts looking to explore the mountains of Miyagi.
While the boardwalks are well-maintained, sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended for comfort and stability. Since temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season and weather, please bring layers to adjust your clothing. As this is a protected natural area, picking plants or any activity that may damage the environment is strictly forbidden.
