The Sekai-ichi no Sakura Namiki (World's Greatest Cherry Blossom Avenue) is a magnificent, 20km-long cherry blossom path located at the foot of Mt. Iwaki in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture. It is home to approximately 6,500 Oyamazakura (mountain cherry) trees, and its sheer scale has earned it the reputation of being the 'world's greatest' cherry blossom avenue. A unique feature of this location is the way the blossoms bloom at different times depending on the altitude; as you move from lower to higher elevations, you can witness the progression of the season. The area is equipped with walking paths alongside the road, making it perfect for both scenic drives and leisurely strolls.
The creation of this avenue was a long-term project that began in 1985, with the planting of Oyamazakura trees spanning over a decade. The history of this path is rooted in a deliberate plan to create a beautiful cherry blossom corridor at the foot of the nature-rich Mt. Iwaki. This region has a deep-rooted history of coexistence with nature, and the landscape surrounding Mt. Iwaki remains a vital part of the local cultural identity.
The primary highlight is the overwhelming sight of the Oyamazakura trees filling your entire field of vision. The scale of 20km of continuous cherry blossoms is truly awe-inspiring. Because the blooming progresses from the lower areas near Mozawa toward the higher elevations, the scenery changes beautifully depending on when you visit. Additionally, the well-maintained walking paths allow you to step away from your car and experience the blossoms up close, offering a much more intimate view than just looking through a car window.
The peak season for the cherry blossoms is from late April to early May. Because of the significant elevation changes, the 'best time' to see the flowers varies depending on your location. It is important to time your visit according to the blooming progress, as the flowers bloom sequentially from the lower altitudes upward. We recommend visiting during the daytime to enjoy the vibrant colors of the blossoms under the bright spring sunlight.
