The Sekai-ichi no Nagai Bench (World's Longest Bench) is a magnificent 460.9-meter long bench located at Masuhoura Coast in Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture. More than just a place to rest, it was specifically designed to maximize the enjoyment of the breathtaking views of the Sea of Japan. Situated on a gentle rise, the bench offers an unobstructed, panoramic view of the vast ocean. This spot carries a heartwarming history; it was built in 1987 through the dedicated efforts of approximately 830 local volunteers who wanted to share the beauty of the sunset with the world.
The history of this bench dates back to 1987. It was a community-driven project fueled by the local desire to showcase the region's stunning sunsets to visitors. Due to its impressive scale, it was even featured in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989 as the world's longest bench. This deep connection to the local community and the shared appreciation for nature adds a unique cultural layer to the experience.
The greatest draw is the overwhelming sense of scale and the panoramic vista. Sitting on this 460.9-meter bench feels as though you are floating above the sea. The area is famously known as 'Sunset Hill Masuho' during the evening hours. Watching the sky transition from vibrant orange to deep purple during the 'magic hour' is a truly speechless experience. Additionally, the beach below the bench is perfect for a relaxing stroll.
For the most dramatic experience, we highly recommend visiting during sunset. Watching the sun dip below the horizon of the Sea of Japan is a spectacular event. The coastline is also known for 'Sakuragai' (cherry shells) found on the beach, adding a seasonal charm to your walk. During the day, you can enjoy the vivid contrast between the bright blue sky, the sea, and the long, striking line of the bench.
This is a place to embrace the luxury of doing nothing. Simply sitting on the bench and gazing at the ocean is a profound experience. You can also walk down to the sandy shore to stroll along the water's edge or search for beautiful cherry shells. It is a highly photogenic spot favored by travelers for photography. Even walking from one end of the bench to the other allows you to truly feel the scale of this unique structure.
The area around Shika Town is dotted with spots where you can feel the natural and cultural essence of Noto. The coastline is an excellent driving route. You can also enjoy fresh seafood at nearby restaurants and accommodations, making it a perfect stop on a scenic coastal drive through the Noto Peninsula.
As this is an open-air public space, there is no fee to use the bench. However, if you use nearby parking lots or local restaurants, please note that many small establishments in rural areas may primarily accept cash. We recommend carrying Japanese Yen.
As this is an outdoor public space, there is no permanent English-speaking staff or English-language signage available on-site.

While there are wheelchair-accessible parking spaces available, please be aware that moving from the parking area to the bench or the sandy beach may require preparation due to the natural terrain and coastal environment.
