Seisonkaku is a historic villa established in 1863 (Bunkyu 3) by Maeda Naritatsu, the 13th Lord of the Kaga Clan, as a retirement residence for his mother, Shinryoin (the wife of the 12th Lord, Narohiro). As a premier example of a late Edo-period daimyo estate, it is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The structure is architecturally unique, featuring a Shoin-zukuri (formal study style) on the first floor and a more refined Sukiya-zukuri (teahouse style) on the second floor. The accompanying Higurashi Garden is also a designated national scenic spot, presenting a perfect harmony between architecture and nature.
Originally known as the "Tatsumi Goten," the villa was later renamed "Seisonkaku." The site holds significant political and historical weight; for instance, it served as a headquarters during the Army Special Maneuvers in 1924, and was used as a residence for Prince Higashikuni-no-miya Naruhiko between 1918 and 1919. Today, the interior serves as a museum, displaying calligraphy, paintings, and traditional dolls that preserve the local history. The surrounding area is also rich in heritage, featuring other Ishikawa-designated cultural properties such as the Sencha-seki Sankatei tea house and the Tatsumi Nagaya longhouse.
The most striking feature of Seisonkaku is the transition between architectural styles by floor. The first floor boasts a formal, prestigious Shoin-zukuri style, while the second floor offers a more elegant and artistic Sukiya-zukuri atmosphere. This combination provides a rare glimpse into the lifestyle of high-ranking daimyo families. Furthermore, the Higurashi Garden consists of a main garden, a middle garden (Tsukushino-en and Mannokei-en), and a front garden, all of which are designated as national scenic spots. Whether viewing the garden from the veranda or admiring the intricate details of the building's design, every angle offers a profound aesthetic experience.
Seisonkaku reveals a different face with every season. The beauty of the architecture is particularly striking during spring and autumn, when the changing colors of the garden's foliage complement the wooden structures. The villa is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to see the fine details of the calligraphy and exhibits clearly. In the late afternoon, the shifting light creates beautiful shadows across the garden and the building, offering a serene atmosphere for contemplating historical architecture.

Seisonkaku is located adjacent to Kenrokuen, one of Kanazawa's most famous scenic gardens. Most visitors include Seisonkaku as part of a larger sightseeing route involving Kenrokuen. The surrounding area also contains other historical sites like the Sencha-seki Sankatei and the Dozo Dogura (tool warehouse), making it easy to build a comprehensive historical tour. The site is easily accessible via bus from Kanazawa Station, making it a convenient stop for any Kanazawa itinerary.
As Seisonkaku is a protected cultural property, please observe proper etiquette. You will be required to remove your shoes when entering certain parts of the building, so we recommend wearing easy-to-remove footwear. Please check the rules regarding photography, as some areas or exhibits may be restricted. While payments are handled at the local reception, it is wise to confirm the accepted payment methods (cash or card) in advance. English-language signage and support may vary, so please check availability upon arrival. As there are some steps and uneven surfaces, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
