The Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru is a historic memorial facility that preserves an actual Seikan ferry, which once navigated the waters between Honshu and Hokkaido. This vessel played a vital role in supporting Japan's modernization and logistics. Currently moored at Aomori Port, it serves as a museum where visitors can observe the intricate ship structures, equipment, and technology of that era up close.
The Seikan Ferry was a crucial transportation link connecting Aomori and Hakodate across the Tsugaru Strait. The Hakkodamaru stands as a symbol of this historical role. Inside, you can find traces of the lifestyles of past passengers and the advanced technology used for transporting goods. This facility is more than just an exhibit; it is a cultural heritage site that conveys the maritime history of Japan and the connections between regions.
The ship is divided into several decks, each offering unique exhibits. On the 4th-floor navigation deck, you can explore the bridge and radio room, showcasing the navigation technology of the time. The area around the funnel also serves as an observation space, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. The 3rd-floor promenade deck recreates living spaces such as the staterooms and the captain's quarters, once used as premium accommodations. On the 1st-floor vehicle deck, you can see the space once used for transporting railway cars and postal vehicles, illustrating the logistics system that connected sea and land routes. Finally, the B1 level engine room allows you to see the heart of the ship, where eight 1,600-horsepower engines once powered the vessel.
During the summer season (April 1 to October 31), the museum stays open until 19:00, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of the ship even in the evening. In the winter (November 1 to March 31), the closing time is shortened to 17:00, and the museum is closed on Mondays. On clear days, the view from the 4th-floor observation deck is exceptionally vivid and perfect for ocean viewing. Please note that the funnel observation area may be closed during bad weather or the winter season.
Through the exhibits, you can observe the daily lives of sailors and passengers, as well as advanced mechanical engineering. To commemorate your visit, you can collect one of two special stamps available on-site. Additionally, there is a space where you can take commemorative photos while wearing authentic crew uniforms and hats, providing a visual and immersive way to understand the historical background.
Hakkodamaru is located near the ferry pier in Aomori Port, surrounded by various sightseeing spots in the Aomori Bay Area. You can also check local gourmet and event information through community apps like "PIAZZA." The site is within walking distance from JR Aomori Station, making it an easy stop during your travels.
The ship is a non-smoking facility. Bringing food or drinks inside is generally prohibited, except for water/hydration. As the ship contains stairs and uneven surfaces, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you are using a wheelchair, please consult the front desk or use the intercom in advance, as movement may be restricted. Please respect the rules regarding contact with exhibits and photography etiquette.
