Sewari-tei is a part of the Yodogawa Riverside Park located in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture. Situated at the confluence of the Uji and Kizu Rivers, it features a beautiful stretch of cherry blossoms spanning approximately 1.4 km. During the spring season, about 220 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full, creating a breathtaking pink tunnel effect. This area is one of the most iconic scenic spots in southern Kyoto, offering a beautiful landscape that changes with the seasons alongside the natural river scenery.
The history of this region is deeply connected to the management of water and flood control. In the late 19th century, the Yodogawa area experienced several large-scale floods, including a significant event in 1885. These challenges led to extensive riverbed improvement projects. The current river path was established in 1910 (Meiji 43) through various river-shaping works.
While the area once featured magnificent pine groves known as 'Yamashiro no Hadachi,' changes in the environment led to a transition. Since 1978, the area has seen the planting of Somei Yoshino cherry trees to enhance its natural beauty. By April 1988, the site was opened to the public as the beautiful cherry blossom path seen today. It serves not only as a vital flood control facility but also as a cherished cultural site that showcases the natural beauty of the region.
The highlight is undoubtedly the 1.4km tunnel of Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms. The sight of the trees blooming so densely that they seem to cover the sky is a magical experience for all visitors. Additionally, the adjacent 'Sakura Deai-kan' features an observation tower approximately 28 meters high. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the area where the three rivers meet. During the seasonal 'Sakura Festival,' visitors can enjoy the 'Sakura Marche' for local food and sweets, or take a unique perspective via the 'Sakura Deai Cruise' and 'E-boat' tours to view the blossoms from the water.
The best time to visit is during the cherry blossom season in April. During full bloom, the scenery is spectacular under the bright daylight, and the view from the observation tower is particularly breathtaking. The area is lively with families and tourists during the day. Please note that while the Sakura Deai-kan facility is generally open from 9:00 to 17:00, the observation tower itself closes at 16:30, so please plan your visit accordingly.
During the spring festival period, a variety of activities are available. You can enjoy local delicacies and sweets at the 'Sakura Marche,' or experience a different view of the blossoms through the 'Sakura Deai Cruise.' The well-maintained paths are also excellent for walking or cycling, allowing you to relax and immerse yourself in nature.
The area around Sewari-tei is rich in history. Nearby landmarks include the historic Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. The vast Yodogawa Riverside Park also includes designated BBQ areas and nature observation spots, making it a great destination for nature lovers even outside the cherry blossom season.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. As the riverside can feel chilly when the wind blows in spring, bringing a light jacket or wrap is a good idea. Please follow local etiquette: carry your trash home and refrain from smoking outside of designated areas. If you are visiting by large bus, please check for any necessary prior arrangements or reservations.
