The Ohbari Sawashiri Rice Terraces are a stunning scenic spot located in Mar森 Town, Miyagi Prefecture. Spanning a total area of 4.1 hectares, the landscape is characterized by layers of terraced fields that follow the natural contours of the mountain slopes. Surrounded by lush greenery, this site is a symbol of traditional Japanese rural landscapes. Depending on the season, the view changes dramatically—from the sky reflecting in the water-filled paddies to the vibrant growth of rice stalks and the golden hues of harvest.
The landscape has been meticulously maintained by local communities from the Edo period through to the modern era (post-1946). These terraces, built by hand to utilize the limited flat land and steep slopes, serve as a precious testament to the 'Satoyama' culture—the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. It is a place where you can truly feel the rhythm of traditional Japanese agricultural life.

The greatest draw is the aesthetic beauty of the curved lines formed by the terraced fields. From spring to early summer, the landscape transforms as water is filled into the paddies for planting, creating a mirror-like surface that reflects the sky. Additionally, during certain seasons, the surrounding mountains feature blooming wisteria flowers, creating a stunning contrast between the delicate purple blossoms and the fresh green foliage. The shifting colors of nature offer a new experience with every visit.
The changing scenery is the hallmark of this location. From April to June, the area is particularly beautiful as the rice-planting season begins and the fresh greenery thrives. Late May is a highlight, as the sight of active rice planting provides a deep sense of traditional Japanese rural life. During this time, you may also see wisteria in bloom. For the best photography, visit during the bright daylight hours; the contrast between the blue sky and the green landscape, along with the light reflecting off the water, creates a highly photogenic moment.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful moment while gazing at the traditional Satoyama landscape. It is an ideal spot for refreshing your mind in nature, practicing landscape photography, or simply observing the subtle transitions of the seasons. The serene environment allows for a deep connection with the original scenery of Japan.
