Sasaryu Dam is a historic landmark located in the Akagawa district of Hakodate, Hokkaido. Constructed in 1923, it is renowned as Japan's first buttress dam. Due to its unique structural significance, it has been officially recognized as a "Civil Engineering Heritage" site. In front of the dam lies the "Mae-niwa Plaza," a well-maintained grassy lawn area that serves as a peaceful retreat for locals and visitors alike. The site is characterized by the striking beauty of the dam's structure set against a backdrop of lush, changing seasonal landscapes.
The dam utilizes a "buttress" design, a method used to conserve concrete by supporting the face of the dam with a series of structural walls (buttresses). This design was a highly advanced engineering technique for the Taisho era (early 20th century), allowing for efficient use of precious materials. Following renovations in 1985, the dam continues to serve as a vital water source for the citizens of Hakodate. It holds significant historical value and is associated with various lists of important modern waterworks and industrial heritage sites in Japan.

The area surrounding the dam is rich in nature and highly accessible from Hakodate city center. It is approximately a 15-minute drive from the heart of Hakodate. The surrounding region also features various hot spring (onsen) facilities and accommodations, making it a perfect stop during a sightseeing tour or a rest point on a drive toward Sapporo.
As the dam is located in a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to enjoy a picnic at the Mae-niwa Plaza, bringing a leisure sheet (picnic mat) is highly recommended. For safety and maintenance of the dam, please refrain from entering restricted areas. Since temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season, please dress appropriately for the weather.
