The Sawaira Rice Terraces are beautiful terraced fields spreading across the gentle, fan-shaped slopes of Asahi Town, Yamagata Prefecture. In 1999, this area was officially recognized as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: in spring, the water-filled terraces create a stunning "water mirror" effect reflecting the sky; in summer, the fields are filled with vibrant green; and in autumn, a golden carpet of ripe rice spreads across the hills. You can also observe the traditional "kuinoko" (hanging rice) scenery in autumn, a sight that preserves the essence of old Japan.
Rice cultivation in this region has long utilized the unique topography of the land. These terraces are more than just agricultural tools; they are a cultural landscape deeply intertwined with local life. The "kuinoko" (hanging rice) technique seen in autumn—where rice is hung to dry in a rhythmic, orderly fashion—is a traditional method that serves as a symbol of the region's deep-rooted farming culture. This beautiful landscape is a living testament to the history of coexistence between humans and nature.
The greatest draw is the dramatic transformation of the landscape throughout the year. Visitors can witness the "water mirror" scenery in spring, the lush green gradients of summer, and the golden waves of rice in autumn. Ipponmatsu Park is a key vantage point for viewing the terraces. The park also features the "Himesayuri Garden," where visitors can enjoy the beauty of Hime-sayuri (lily-like) flowers blooming from late May to early June, adding a floral touch to the agricultural landscape.
Because the landscape changes so significantly, your experience will depend on when you visit. Spring (April–May) is the time for the "water mirror" effect. Summer (June–August) showcases the most vibrant, life-filled greenery. Autumn (September–October) offers the golden rice stalks and the traditional "kuinoko" scenery. Winter (January–March) provides a quiet, snow-covered landscape. For the best photography, consider visiting during the early morning or the soft light of late afternoon.
Photography and nature observation are the primary activities here. At the Ipponmatsu Park direct sales office, you may encounter local women selling fresh local produce during the autumn season. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience local food and warm community interactions. You can also enjoy seasonal flower viewing, such as the Hime-sayuri, within the park area.
There are several other spots in Asahi Town that highlight the region's natural beauty. For example, you can enjoy local flavors at the "Asahi Town Wine Castle" winery. Other nearby cultural and outdoor attractions include the historic Satake Family Residence and the scenic Mogami River Canoe Land. Preparation is key depending on the season. From spring to autumn, wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain. In winter, check road conditions in advance as snow may affect vehicle access. Cash is required for purchases at local roadside stands or small shops. While the area is open for public viewing, please be respectful of farmers' work and avoid entering active agricultural areas. Most of the viewing areas are unpaved, so prepare accordingly.
