Sasaharagawa Senbonzakura is a breathtaking cherry blossom destination located along the banks of the Sasahara River in the Mihota-cho area of Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. The scenery features approximately 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees neatly lined up along a 2km stretch of the riverbank, centered around the Myojin Bridge area. This site is more than just a natural landscape; it is a testament to the deep connection between the community and the land, shaped by decades of local tree-planting efforts and river management. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, the site was honored with the 'Sakura Kuryo-sho' (Cherry Blossom Merit Award) by the Japan Cherry Blossom Association in 1996.
The history of this landscape began with river improvements in the 1950s and 60s. Originally, the embankments were developed as part of flood control measures, but the beautiful cherry blossom rows were later established through the dedicated tree-planting efforts of local residents. This community-driven initiative serves as the foundation for the lush, vibrant cherry blossom tunnels seen today, blending natural environmental management with local cultural heritage.
The most striking feature is the continuous row of roughly 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees that follow the curve of the river. During the day, visitors can enjoy the serene view of blossoms reflecting off the flowing water. At night, the atmosphere transforms completely. Traditional lanterns (bonbori) are lit around the waterwheel hut area, casting a warm glow on the blossoms. This nighttime illumination creates a magical, dreamlike scenery that is quite different from the daytime view, making it a must-see for evening strolls.
The peak blooming season is typically from early to mid-April. Visitors can enjoy bright, sunny walks through the blossoms during the day. For a truly enchanting experience, visit during the evening illumination hours (scheduled from 18:00 to 21:00). The changing light from day to night offers two distinct and beautiful expressions of the landscape.
During the early spring, the 'Sasaharagawa Senbonzakura Festival' is held, often featuring local community events alongside the blossoms. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the 2km riverside promenade, exploring the different views as they move along the river. The area around the traditional waterwheel hut is particularly famous for its scenic nighttime beauty.
The area surrounding Sasahara River features various restaurants and cafes throughout Koriyama City. After your stroll, you can head toward the city center to enjoy local Fukushima specialties or relax at a local cafe. There are many dining options available in the wider Koriyama area to complement your sightseeing trip.
When visiting in spring, please be prepared for fluctuating temperatures. If you plan to stay for the evening illumination, it is highly recommended to bring a light jacket or wrap, as it can get quite chilly near the river at night. While most of the area is open, please be aware that English signage may be limited. For payments at nearby stalls or local events, it is best to carry cash, though some vendors may accept credit cards. The riverside paths are generally suitable for walking, but wear comfortable shoes suitable for unpaved or slightly uneven embankment paths.
