Sarobetsu Gensei Kaden is a part of the vast Sarobetsu Wilderness, stretching across Toyotomi and Horonobe in northern Hokkaido. This area is one of Japan's largest high-altitude wetlands and was designated as a Ramsar site in 2005. Characterized by a unique peat-formed landscape, the region boasts incredibly rich vegetation. Visitors can experience a spectacular view where the vast sky meets the horizon, filled with seasonal wildflowers and a thriving natural ecosystem.

History & Cultural Background

The name is derived from the Ainu word "Saraope," meaning "river in the reeds." Historically, the area faced environmental changes such as drying due to land development for dairy farming. However, intensive conservation and restoration efforts are now underway. In 2020, specific areas were acquired to protect the habitat of the Siberian Jay, demonstrating ongoing commitment to biodiversity. The area is also recognized as one of Japan's "Top 100 Hidden Gems."

Visitors can observe a changing botanical landscape throughout the seasons. You might see Skunk Cabbage in May, Black Lilies in June, or Eriocaulon in July. With over 100 species blooming sequentially, the variety is immense. It is also a haven for birdwatchers; keep an eye out for White-tailed Eagles, Steller's Sea Eagles, Red-crowned Cranes, and the Siberian Jay. Mammals like the Ezo Red Fox, Ezo Deer, and Ezo Squirrel are also frequently spotted.
