Sarakuen is a beautiful Japanese stroll garden (Chisen-kaiyu-shiki) located within a municipal park in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Spanning approximately 20,000 m², the garden is designed so that visitors can enjoy ever-changing views of ponds, waterfalls, and stone bridges while walking through the grounds. The space offers a serene atmosphere where seasonal flora and historic structures harmonize perfectly.
This garden is renowned for its traditional Japanese landscaping techniques. The grounds are dotted with structures of significant historical value that offer a deep sense of cultural richness. For example, the Funa-yakata (boat-style house) and the Western-style architecture of the former Komadera stable and the former Hassam residence are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. These structures serve as precious relics of Japan's modern architectural history and blend seamlessly with the natural landscape to create a unique, nostalgic ambiance.
The greatest charm of Sarakuen lies in its landscape, which utilizes natural topography and water flow. As you stroll around the pond via stepping stones and stone bridges, you can experience the beauty of nature up close. Other highlights include the diverse plant life, such as the massive camphor tree estimated to be 500 years old and the Cycas garden. In late April, the blooming azaleas are a major draw for visitors. Additionally, during certain periods, the garden features nighttime illuminations, offering a magical and ethereal atmosphere quite different from the daytime experience.

The garden is particularly breathtaking during the autumn foliage season and during special illumination events. The primary activity is a peaceful stroll through the natural scenery. Walking slowly around the pond while listening to the sounds of water and wind allows you to forget the daily hustle and bustle. To enjoy your walk comfortably, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the environment is natural, the paths include uneven stone surfaces, stepping stones, and stairs. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season (heat protection for summer, warmth for autumn/winter).
