Saraki Misaki (also known as Saraki Cape) is a scenic headland located in Kikonai Town, Isari District, Hokkaido. Once a rugged area of stone and sand, it was transformed through the dedication of local residents following a donation of tulip bulbs in 2001. Today, it is celebrated as one of Hokkaido's most iconic floral landmarks, where approximately 50,000 tulips bloom in early summer. The striking contrast between the vibrant, colorful flower beds and the deep blue of the surrounding ocean creates a truly unforgettable view.
The cape holds significant historical weight. In 1871, the Kanrin Maru, a famous vessel of the Edo Shogunate, is said to have met its end in the waters off this coast. To honor this history, the site features the Kanrin Maru Memorial and various monuments inspired by the ship. The development of the garden is a testament to community spirit; since November 2003, local residents have actively worked to cultivate the flower beds. In 2010, the project received a local heritage award for its efforts in creating a cultural and tourism hub at Saraki Misaki. It is not just a natural site, but a place shaped by the history and passion of the local people.
The primary draw is the sea of approximately 50,000 tulips that bloom in early summer, offering a different colorful expression each season. Visitors can also explore the historical connection to the vessel 'Kanrin Maru' through its monuments. The combination of the open ocean views and the historical relics provides a profound sense of peace. During the month of May, the Tulip Fair is held, allowing visitors to enjoy local specialty products and seasonal festivities alongside the floral displays.
The best time to visit is from May to June. The peak of the tulip season coincides with the 'Tulip Fair' in May, offering the most spectacular views and a lively atmosphere. For the best photography, visit during the bright daylight hours to capture the vivid contrast between the colorful flowers and the blue sea. We recommend checking the blooming status before your visit to ensure you catch the peak colors.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the flower-lined paths. During the tulip season, the local product fairs offer a wonderful opportunity to taste and purchase regional specialties and local ingredients. It is a perfect place for a peaceful retreat, where you can contemplate history while gazing at the vast ocean horizon.
Saraki Misaki is located along National Route 228. The surrounding area is a popular driving route, offering beautiful views of the Hokkaido coastline. The drive through Kikonai Town provides a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of the region alongside the scenic cape views.
