Sanshiroshima Island is a unique natural site located in the Dogashima area of West Izu, Shizuok Prefecture. It is famous for the "Tombolo" phenomenon, where a temporary sandbar or "sea path" appears between the island (located about 200m offshore) and the mainland only when the tide goes out. This creates a mystical experience where you can literally walk across the ocean to reach the island.
This region is celebrated for its beautiful coastlines and rich marine ecosystem. The path to Sanshiroshima is controlled by the natural ebb and flow of the tides. Because this path only reveals itself under specific conditions, it has long been cherished as a place to witness the wonders of nature. It stands as a symbol of the raw, natural beauty found in West Izu.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the "Sea Path" that appears during low tide. Walking across the sandbar as the waves recede is a rare and special experience that feels disconnected from everyday life. Additionally, the tide pools along the way are home to various marine life, making it a wonderful spot for nature observation.
The path to Sanshiroshima is primarily accessible from March to September during low tide periods. The best chance to see a clearly defined path is during spring tides (large tides), typically within 1 to 1.5 hours before or after the lowest tide time. Please note that from October to February, the tide rarely recedes enough during the day to reveal the path. The period from March to April is an excellent season to enjoy this mystical phenomenon alongside the beautiful spring nature of West Izu.
Local nature guides sometimes host "Mystical Experience Tours." By joining a guided walk to Sanshiroshima or participating in a tide pool classroom, you can gain a deeper understanding of marine life and the mechanics of natural phenomena. Some tours may even offer small souvenirs or discounts for nearby sightseeing boats and facilities.
The surrounding Dogashima area offers many ways to enjoy the scenery, such as sightseeing cruises through the famous Blue Cave or visiting the Izu Trick Art Museum, which are great for families. Additionally, West Izu is dotted with many hot spring (onsen) facilities, making it the perfect place to relax after your nature walk.
When crossing to Sanshiroshima, you will be walking on rocky and sandy paths. Because the terrain can be wet and unstable, please bring sport sandals or marine shoes. Standard rubber flip-flops or cheap sandals are not recommended for safety reasons as they are slippery. For parking, please use the free municipal parking lots (such as the Dogashima Park parking lot) located near Route 136. To protect the environment, please ensure you take all trash back with you and respect the natural surroundings.
