Sannoke Castle Ruins Shiroyama Park is a National Historic Site located in Sannohe Town, Sannohe District, Aomori Prefecture. It is the site of a castle built by the Nanbu clan, who ruled this region during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The park is recognized as one of the "100 Best Historical Parks in Japan." The vast grounds preserve significant historical structures, including stone walls (ishigaki), earthen ramparts (dorui), and moats (hori), which showcase the castle's original layout. Surrounded by lush greenery, the park offers a perfect blend of historical exploration and seasonal natural beauty.
This site served as a vital strategic stronghold for the Nanbu clan. The defensive structures, which highlight the military architecture of the Sengoku period, were officially designated as a National Historic Site on March 15, 2022. The area has been carefully preserved as a symbol of the region's development as a castle town. Within the park, various facilities house precious artifacts and documents that trace the history of Sannohe from the Jomon period to the modern era, including records related to the Nanbu lords and their vassals.
Visitors can explore various remnants of the ancient fortress, such as the 'Tsunamon' (a significant gate structure), earthen embankments, and moat-lined paths that illustrate historical military designs. The History and Folklore Museum offers a systematic look at the local heritage. For families, the park also features a deer park and an event plaza with playground equipment, making it a place where historical-themed sightseeing and modern recreation coexist harmoniously.
The park transforms with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, vibrant maple leaves in autumn, and plum blossoms in early spring. The spring season is particularly lively, especially during the 'Sannohe Spring Festival' when the diverse flora is in full bloom and many locals gather to celebrate.
At the History and Folklore Museum and the Sannoke Castle Koko-kan, you can view authentic samurai armor, clothing, and historical documents belonging to the Nanbu clan and their retainers. These exhibits are essential for understanding the cultural evolution of the region. The park's natural environment is also ideal for leisurely walks or enjoying outdoor activities in the dedicated play areas for children.
