Overview & Charm

Sannoji Rice Terraces is a breathtaking landscape located on the slopes of a mountain at an altitude of 300m in the northeastern part of Daito, Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture. In 1999, it was officially designated as one of 'Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces.' The area features approximately 200 terraced rice paddies spread across a 19-hectare area, creating a stunning layered effect. This site is a precious landscape preserved by local farmers, offering a window into the traditional rural life of Japan.

History & Cultural Background

The region has a long history of living in harmony with agriculture. Furthermore, the area is home to the tradition of 'Sannoji Kagura,' a performance designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture. This allows visitors to glimpse the deep-rooted traditional culture that remains an integral part of the local way of life. The preservation of this landscape by the local community, working closely with the natural environment, forms the historical backbone of this location.

Main Highlights

The greatest attraction is the sight of the multi-layered rice terraces built along the mountain's natural contours. You can enjoy the changing scenery dictated by the growth stages of the rice, the shifting colors of the sky, and the harmony with the surrounding mountain ranges. The view is particularly spectacular during the seasons when the fields are filled with water, reflecting the sky, or when the rice stalks turn a brilliant golden hue.

Seasonal Recommendations & Best Times to Visit

The appearance of the terraces changes significantly with the seasons. From spring to summer, you can witness the beautiful sight of the sky reflecting in the water-filled paddies. From September to November, the landscape transforms as the rice ears turn golden in preparation for harvest. For photography enthusiasts, the bright daylight hours are ideal, as the contrast between the blue sky and the lush green or golden fields is most vivid.
