Sanko Inari Shrine is a historic shrine located at the foot of Inuyama Castle in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. While it has long been a place of worship for the local community, it has recently gained immense popularity among female travelers and younger visitors due to its incredibly charming and photogenic appearance. The shrine grounds are adorned with numerous pink heart-shaped ema (votive tablets), creating a highly Instagrammable scenery. It is also well-known for unique experiences such as seeking matchmaking luck and the traditional practice of 'money washing' to invite prosperity.
The exact founding date of the shrine is not recorded, but it is said that it was once located within the current Marunouchi Green Park. The shrine has a deep history, having been revered by Nobuyasu Oda, the first lord of Inuyama Castle. Since the Edo period, it has been cherished as the guardian deity for the successive families of the Inuyama lords. The main deities enshrined include Ukanomitama-no-Okami, Sarutahiko-no-Okami, and Omiya-me-no-Okami, who are worshipped for protection over food, clothing, and shelter, as well as for 'Michihiraki' (opening the way) to guide one's life in a positive direction. It offers a unique atmosphere where historical weight meets modern aesthetic trends.
The most striking features are the 'Heart Ema' and 'Heart Omikuji' (fortune slips) displayed throughout the grounds. These heart-shaped charms are popular among visitors praying for good luck in love and relationships. Another must-see is the Zenarai Inari Shrine, where visitors can wash money in pure spring water. It is believed that washing your money in this water will multiply your wealth many times over. Additionally, the shrine offers various blessings through its different sub-shrines, such as Sarutahiko-no-Okami (the god of direction and protection) and Himekami-no-Kami (the goddess of skill and happiness), making every visit a multifaceted spiritual experience.
While the shrine is beautiful year-round, visiting during the spring is highly recommended to enjoy the scenery alongside the surrounding cherry blossoms. For the best photography, we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours, as the vibrant colors of the heart-shaped charms and the natural light make for stunning photos. The peaceful atmosphere in the late afternoon is also ideal for those seeking a quiet moment of prayer and reflection.
During your visit, you can participate in the tradition of writing a message on a pink heart-shaped ema or drawing a heart-shaped fortune slip. You can also experience the traditional Japanese custom of 'money washing' by requesting the service at the shrine office. These activities offer a much deeper connection to Japanese culture than simple sightseeing. For those who collect Goshuin (temple/shrine stamps), the shrine also offers special items like original Nishijin-ori (traditional textile) Goshuin books.
Inuyama Castle, a National Treasure, is located very close to Sanko Inari Shrine. Looking up at the castle from the shrine provides a truly historic and majestic view. Additionally, the Inuyama Castle Town (Honcho Street) is within walking distance, where you can enjoy traditional street food and shopping. The area is filled with historic architecture, glass workshops, and kimono rental shops, making it a perfect area to spend an entire day exploring the culture of Inuyama.
There is no specific dress code, but comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended as the shrine features some steps and slopes. If you plan to purchase amulets, Goshuin, or participate in the money-washing experience, please carry small change or cash. While photography is generally permitted, please be respectful and refrain from taking photos during active religious ceremonies or prayers. While some nearby shops may accept credit cards, it is highly recommended to carry cash for purchasing amulets or Goshuin at the shrine.
