Sanko Cosmos Garden is a seasonal flower park located at the foot of Mt. Hachimen in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. Originally farmland, this area was transformed into one of Japan's largest cosmos gardens through a local revitalization project. The garden covers an area of approximately 15 hectares, with about 10 hectares dedicated to roughly 12 million cosmos flowers, primarily in shades of pink. The sight of a vast pink carpet spreading across the landscape under the crisp autumn air is a truly unforgettable experience for all visitors.
The history of this garden dates back to 2007. It began when ten local farming cooperatives in the Sanko district of Nakatsu formed the "Japan's No. 1 Cosmos Garden Creation Group." Their shared goal was to revitalize the community by converting traditional farmland into a beautiful, symbolic landscape. Through the dedication of local residents, these fields evolved from simple agricultural land into a precious seasonal tourism resource, representing the strong community spirit and natural beauty of Nakatsu City.
The absolute highlight is the massive expanse of color created by the 12 million cosmos flowers. The sight of pink blooms waving like a sea of waves is the garden's signature view. Depending on the specific timing, the landscape may also feature around 45,000 sunflowers across 1.5 hectares, offering different botanical expressions. The location at the foot of Mt. Hmachimen also provides a stunning visual contrast between the colorful flower fields in the foreground and the majestic silhouette of the mountain in the background.
The peak season for Sanko Cosmos Garden is typically from October to mid-November. This is when the cosmos are in full bloom and the scenery is at its most spectacular. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to see the vibrant colors clearly, which is also the best time for photography.
