The House of Councillors offers official guided tours led by security officers (Eishi) following a designated route. These tours are available to those who have completed the registration process and typically take about 60 minutes to complete. This is a rare opportunity to witness the inner workings of the Japanese legislative-making process through an official, structured route.
The House of Councillors is one of the two houses that comprise the National Diet of Japan. The National Diet Building is a central hub for the nation's political activities. The interior architecture reflects high-level Japanese craftsmanship and technical skill, utilizing specialized materials and traditional design elements. The facility also maintains a system for public engagement, such as special viewing opportunities on specific Sundays when the Diet is not in session.
The tour route primarily includes the viewing lobby and the House of Councillors chamber. The chamber is the central space where Japanese legislative debates take place, allowing visitors to observe its grand structure and design firsthand. Visitors follow a strictly guided path led by security officers to ensure both safety and an informative experience.
Standard tours are available Monday through Friday (excluding holidays and New Year holidays) from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with registration occurring at the start of every hour. However, please note that tours are suspended on days when plenary sessions are scheduled, from one hour before the session begins until the session concludes. During school vacation periods, morning sessions may become crowded; visiting in the afternoon is a great way to avoid peak times. Additionally, on the 1st and 3rd Sundays after the Diet session ends, special viewing is available through applications made via Diet members.
