Sandanbeki is a stunning scenic area in Shirahama, Wakayama, characterized by continuous sheer cliffs rising approximately 60m above the sea. The landscape features rugged rock faces facing the Pacific Ocean and beautiful vistas stretching to the horizon. The area is well-equipped with facilities that allow you to enjoy both nature and relaxation, such as an observation deck to feel the scale of the cliffs, a sea cave located 36m below ground, and a free footbath (ashiyu) to soothe your feet.
The area surrounding Sandanbeki is steeped in ancient legends. For instance, the sea cave beneath the cliffs is said to have been used by the Kumano Navy to hide their ships in the past. Additionally, the site known as the "Kuchibeni Monument" (Lipstick Monument) evokes a sense of historical romance, preserving stories of tragic love from eras past.
There are many diverse spots to captivate every visitor. First, the "Sandanbeki Observation Deck" offers the perfect backdrop of 60m cliffs and the vast Pacific Ocean, making it an ideal spot for photography. Next, you can descend 36m via elevator to the "Sandanbeki Sea Cave," where you can experience the powerful sound of crashing waves and a dramatic landscape. On the cliffside, you will find "Sudden Rock," a distinctive rock formation said to have appeared after a typhoon in 2018, showcasing the wonders of nature. Furthermore, the area is recognized as a "Lovers' Sanctuary," featuring heart-shaped monuments where visitors can hang love locks.
While Sandanbeki is beautiful year-round, the contrast between the blue sea and white sea spray is particularly stunning on clear days during bright daylight hours. For a more relaxing experience, we recommend watching the sunset over the ocean while enjoying a drink at the cliffside cafe. Inside the sea cave, the dynamic energy of the waves can be felt regardless of the time of day.
There are plenty of ways to engage your senses here. You can explore the history of the area while listening to the rhythmic waves in the sea cave, or simply enjoy the panoramic views from the observation deck. Between walks, you can relax at the "Sandanbeki Footbath" while gazing at the Pacific. Near the base, you can enjoy local seafood such as grilled turban shells (sazae) or squid at the "Sandan Street" shops, or spend a peaceful moment at the "Gake Cafe" overlooking the sea. Cycling is also a great way to explore the surrounding area.
Sandanbeki is surrounded by many tourist attractions, including the famous Shirahama Onsen (hot springs). Nearby, you can find Monjudo, related to the Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage, and beautiful Japanese gardens with seasonal flowers. The nearby shopping streets offer plenty of local gourmet food and souvenirs.
As some areas near the cliff edges may have uneven footing, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers). While elevators and stairs are available to access the sea cave and observation deck, it is wise to dress appropriately for changing weather conditions since you are in a natural environment.
