Mount Sanbe is one of only two active volcanoes in the Chugoku region, located in Shimane Prefecture. The "Kunibiki Myth" recorded in the 8th-century Izumo no Kuni Fudoki tells of a deity who used Mount Sanbe and Mount Daisen as stakes to stabilize the land during the creation of the nation. Additionally, the unique landscape of the mountain's grasslands is preserved through the traditional practice of "Hi-ire" (controlled burning), which helps to sprout fresh, healthy grass every year.
There are several unique spots to explore on and around Mount Sanbe. One notable location is Himenogai-ike Pond on the northern foot of the mountain, where thousands of beautiful water iris (Kakitsubata) bloom in early summer. Another fascinating site is the Sanbe Azuchara Buried Forest Park, where you can see ancient trees that were preserved standing upright after being buried by volcanic eruptions. For hikers, you can traverse the various peaks or descend into the Muro crater. A mountain hut, "Sanbe Sancho-goya," is also available near the summit for safety.

The area around Mount Sanbe is well-equipped with convenient facilities for tourists. Sanbe Onsen is a popular destination for those seeking the healing properties of volcanic hot springs. For those looking to camp, the Sanbe Kitanohara Campground is highly recommended. Many hiking routes begin near the hot spring areas, allowing you to easily combine a vigorous hike with a relaxing soak.
When hiking, please ensure you have appropriate hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing. Many of the trails have steep sections, so sturdy gear is highly recommended. As this is a natural park, please follow all local etiquette, especially regarding the rule of carrying all your trash back out with you. While the mountain is open to the public, always prepare for sudden changes in weather.
