The Ogina Rice Terraces are located in the high-altitude plateau of Ogama Village, Aso District, Kumamoto, at an elevation of 820 meters. As the name suggests, the landscape is characterized by 16 terraced fields arranged in a distinctive fan-shaped formation. This site is designated as an Important Cultural Landscape by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and is celebrated as one of the 100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan, holding significant historical and cultural value. The geometric, pond-like appearance of the terraces, nestled within the natural contours of the land, creates a breathtakingly harmonious landscape.

The primary attraction is the geometric beauty formed by the 16 terraced fields and three prominent cedar trees. During the rice-planting season, the water-filled terraces act as natural mirrors, reflecting the surrounding scenery with incredible clarity. On clear days, the view opens up to provide a magnificent panorama of three of Japan's top 100 mountains: Mount Aso, Mount Kuju, and Mount Obama. The landscape changes constantly throughout the day, offering different expressions such as the glow of the morning sun, the brilliance of the starry night sky, or the sight of grazing cattle reflected in the water.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. The most striking time to visit is during the rice-planting season, when the water-filled terraces create a mirror-like effect, reflecting the sky and greenery. Regardless of the season, the early morning hours and nighttime offer a magical experience, as the reflection of the sunrise or the stars becomes particularly vivid. From spring to summer, the bright sunlight enhances the vivid colors of the landscape, making the geometric beauty of the terrain easy to observe.

The site is located within the Aso-Kurokawa-Tsuta area, a region famous for its abundant natural beauty. It is easily accessible via car from Kumamoto City or the Aso area, making it an excellent destination for a scenic drive. You can easily combine a visit here with other nearby hot spring (onsen) towns and natural landmarks.
As this is an outdoor scenic area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since weather can change quickly in the highlands, please bring a light jacket or rain gear if necessary. While there are maintained paths, the terrain involves uneven surfaces and slopes, so please watch your step.
