Sakuya Konohana Kan is a stunning indoor botanical garden located within the Hana Memorial Park (Tsurumi Ryokuchi) in Tsurumi Ward, Osaka. It was originally constructed as the official pavilion for the 1990 International Flower and Greenery Exposition. The facility features one of Japan's largest glasshouse structures, covering a floor area of 6,890 m², and houses approximately 15,000 plants across 5,500 different species. The architecture is particularly striking, utilizing approximately 5,000 glass panels in a design inspired by water lilies floating on a surface.
The name of the building was chosen through a public competition. It is inspired by the classical poem 'Naniwa-tsu no Uta' from the Kokin Wakashu anthology, which celebrates the blooming of flowers in the Naniwa region. Construction began in 1987, and the facility was completed in 1990 as a symbol of international botanical exchange. The structure, designed by Nikken Sekkei and Rantech Planning Office, is celebrated for its sophisticated glass-based architectural design.
