Sakuradaki Falls is a magnificent waterfall located in Amase, Hita City, Oita Prefecture, standing approximately 25 meters high and 15 meters wide. Originating from the Goma Plateau and flowing into the Gaku River, its presence has fascinated visitors for generations. The water volume is abundant, and the way it breaks into fine, silk-like threads creates a mesmerizing texture. The name "Sakuradaki" (Cherry Blossom Falls) was bestowed because the fine mist rising from the impact of the water looks remarkably like falling cherry blossom petals.
The history of this waterfall is deeply rooted in local literature. It was even recorded in the 1803 book "Bungo no Kuni-shi," a geographical record of the Bungo Province (modern-day Oita). The text describes the water as being "as beautiful as scattering blossoms and as elegant as a hanging bamboo blind." This enduring charm has made it a cultural symbol of the Amase region and one of the celebrated "Amase Three Waterfalls."
The most striking feature is the way the water hits the rocks, creating a fine, misty spray. This unique visual, where the mist mimics the movement of cherry blossoms, offers a sensation unlike any other waterfall. Below the falls, a calm pool provides a beautiful contrast against the surrounding deep green forest and rocky terrain. The site even gained national attention after being featured on the popular Japanese TV program "Matsuko no Shiranai Sekai" as a "hidden gem waterfall that is easy to visit."
Sakuradaki Falls reveals different faces depending on the season. The contrast between the white water and the lush greenery is particularly striking during periods of high water volume. During bright daylight hours, the sunlight reflects off the mist, creating a shimmering effect that is perfect for photography. Visitors can enjoy the changing colors of the surrounding natural environment throughout the year.

Because it is within walking distance of Amagase Station, it is an ideal spot for a casual visit to reconnect with the sounds of nature and the refreshing atmosphere. While not a site for intense hiking, it serves as a perfect destination for mental refreshment and nature walks.
The falls are nestled within the rich natural landscape of the Amase area. You can explore other falls known as the "Amase Six Waterfalls" as part of a scenic nature route. Additionally, the area around Amagase Station is a well-known hot spring (onsen) district, allowing you to combine a visit to the waterfall with a relaxing soak in a hot spring.
As the ground near the falls can be damp or slippery, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While parking and multi-purpose restrooms are available, please respect the environment by taking your trash home and following local preservation rules.
