The Sakata City Museum of Art is a sanctuary of art harmoniously integrated with the natural beauty of Iimoriyama in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture. The museum sits on a sprawling 30,000 square meter site, with a facility area of approximately 3,000 square meters. From its elevated position, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Chokai, the Mogami River, and the cityscape of Sakata. The architecture is designed to utilize the expansive grounds to provide a sense of tranquility and peace. As a cultural hub rooted in the region, the museum boasts a diverse collection ranging from works by renowned Japanese artists to those by talented artists born in the local area.
Opened on October 3, 1997, the museum plays a vital role in preserving and passing down the rich cultural heritage of Sakata to future generations. It serves as a cornerstone for regional artistic promotion. Many of the exhibited works reflect the history, culture, and natural beauty of this land, making the museum more than just an exhibition space—it is a symbol of the local identity and cultural heritage.
The museum's collection includes significant works by Shige Shigeta, a master of Japanese Western-style painting and recipient of the Order of Culture, as well as works by Keiro Kuryo, a member of the Japan Art Academy. A key feature of the museum is the opportunity to appreciate art by artists deeply connected to the region, such as Western-style painters Choji Saito and Masayasu Sato, and the sculptor Tsuyoshi Takahashi. These precious collections are carefully preserved and showcased, primarily in the permanent exhibition rooms, allowing visitors to feel the history and spirit of the region.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to enjoy the art in perfect harmony with the surrounding scenery. The landscape of the vast grounds changes beautifully with each season, offering new discoveries every time you visit. Please note that from December to March, the museum is closed on Mondays. If a Monday is a public holiday, the museum will be closed on the following Tuesday instead.

Regarding photography, please follow the instructions of the staff, as restrictions may apply depending on the exhibition. While the facility is largely accessible, please check with the staff for specific details regarding any steps or obstacles to ensure a smooth visit.
