The Sakai Clan Garden is a designated National Scenic Spot located within the grounds of the Chido Museum in Tsuroka, Yamagata Prefecture. The garden is characterized by a classic 'Tsukiyama Chisen' (hill-and-pond) style, positioned to the north of the Okiden (the lord's residence). The landscape is surrounded by lush greenery, featuring grassy slopes, strategically placed rocks, and meticulously pruned shrubs. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, offering a captivating view of reflections on the water's surface.
This site was once part of the Sannomaru area of Tsurugaoka Castle, where the official residence of the local lord once stood. Today, the grounds of the Chido Museum preserve parts of the Okiden, the retirement residence of the lord. The Sakai Clan Garden, built to the north of this residence, is recognized as one of the few remaining quintessential examples of a Shoin-style garden in the Tohoku region. The landscape, seamlessly integrated with historic architecture, is carefully preserved as a vital piece of regional cultural heritage.
The center of the garden features a calm pond surrounded by rocks and shrubs. The stillness of the water perfectly reflects the surrounding trees and the sky, creating a deeply tranquil atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy the view of the garden from the adjacent Okiden (Sekicho-do) building. Depending on the season, the garden is adorned with blooming flowers such as white azaleas and even more vibrant greenery. Additionally, the grounds feature a variety of architectural styles, including Meiji-era pseudo-Western buildings and traditional thatched-roof structures, allowing visitors to witness the evolution of Japanese architecture.
It is highly recommended to visit from spring to early summer when the vegetation is most lush. The period when white azaleas and other flowers are in bloom is particularly beautiful, as the white blossoms stand out against the deep green foliage. During bright daylight hours, the colors of the sky and the surrounding trees are vividly reflected in the pond. Visiting when the seasonal transitions of the trees and plants are most prominent will provide the most striking experience of the garden's character.
Since the garden is part of the Chido Museum complex, you can explore the structural beauty of a traditional Japanese garden alongside museum exhibits. Viewing the garden from the tatami rooms of the Okiden provides a unique perspective typical of the Shoin-style garden design. You can also wander through the grounds to see the harmony between the traditional thatched-roof houses and the Western-style architecture with its iconic clock tower.
The Sakai Clan Garden is located within the Chido Museum grounds. The surrounding area preserves various historical buildings and exhibits that have been moved here for preservation. Being located near the center of Tsuruoka City, it is easily accessible to other local sightseeing spots.
When walking through the garden, please wear comfortable walking shoes. While there is no specific dress code, appropriate clothing for the season is recommended.
