The facility focuses on two iconic figures: Sen no Rikyu, the legendary master of the tea ceremony from the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and Akiko Yosano, the renowned poet who lived through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. Sakai has long flourished as a prosperous commercial hub, fostering a unique and vibrant culture. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, the city became a center for the tea ceremony, perfected by Sen no Rikya, which grew alongside the city's commercial prosperity. In more recent history, the city saw the influence of Akiko Yosano, who captured the spirit of the Meiji and Taisho eras through her literature. This facility serves to bridge these two distinct eras, preserving and communicating the profound cultural depth of Sakai to the modern world.
The facility is divided into two primary sections: the 1st-floor "Sen no Rikyu Tea Ceremony Hall" and the 2nd-floor "Akiko Yosano Memorial Hall." On the first floor, visitors can learn about Sen no Rikyu and the people of Sakai through multimedia displays, including images and audio. Exhibits such as the "Sumiyoshi Festival Folding Screen" and displays on the historical fortifications of Sakai provide deep historical context. The second floor offers a window into the world of modern literature, allowing visitors to feel the atmosphere of the era in which Akiko Yosano flourished. A tourist information center is also available to help you learn more about the history of the region.
The museum is open year-round, but we recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully enjoy the architecture and exhibits. The tea ceremony experience facility operates from 10:00 to 17:00, making it a perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon. Because the building features an open, glass-walled design, visiting during the day allows you to appreciate the harmony between the natural light and the interior design. Please note that the museum is closed on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and during the New Year holidays; please check your schedule in advance.
Beyond mere observation, the museum offers opportunities to engage directly with Japanese traditional culture. The "Tea Ceremony Experience" allows you to practice the etiquette and spirit of the way of tea established by Sen no Rikyu. Additionally, the facility includes traditional tea rooms (Seiken, Furoken, and Tokiken) which can be reserved for specific uses.
