Sakai Daiba Park is situated on a high vantage point overlooking the Sakaimi Waterway in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture. Historically known as the 'Daiba of Tottori,' this site served as a strategic defense point. Today, it is a beloved destination where visitors can experience the nostalgic atmosphere of a Japanese port town paired with breathtaking coastal scenery.
The park holds significant historical value, having been designated as a national historic site in July 1988 due to its artillery battery ruins. It was one of the first batteries constructed in the San'in region, serving as a crucial defense point. In 1991, a white, wooden-style hexagonal lighthouse was reconstructed, serving as a modern symbol of the local maritime-themed culture and the town's history.
The park features a blend of historical ruins and picturesque landscapes. The most iconic structure is the white lighthouse, which overlooks the sea and provides a quintessential maritime aesthetic. Additionally, the park is home to approximately 240 cherry trees. During the spring season, these trees form a magnificent cherry blossom tunnel, making it a highly popular destination for photography and sightseeing.
The park's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. From late March to early April, the cherry blossoms reach full bloom, often accompanied by local spring festivals. At night, the atmosphere becomes truly magical; approximately 150 lanterns (bonbori) are often set up, creating a dreamy landscape alongside the illuminated lighthouse. Whether you visit during the bright daylight hours for clear views or at night for a romantic atmosphere, the scenery is unforgettable.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while exploring the historical battery ruins and admiring the reconstructed lighthouse. The elevated location offers an unobstructed view of the Sakaimi Waterway and the Sakaimi Ohashi Bridge. It is an ideal spot for a relaxing walk to reconnect with nature and history.
Sakai Daiba Park is located near Sakaiminato, a city famous for having one of the highest seafood catches in Japan. The surrounding area is rich in fishing culture and offers beautiful coastal views. The park is easily accessible, located just about a 5-minute drive from JR Sakaiminato Station.
