Nishizao Bokujo is a scenic pasture located on the Nishizao Plateau at an altitude of 600 meters. The most striking feature of this location is the presence of wild Oyamazakura (mountain cherry blossoms) that grow naturally across the vast landscape. Unlike manicured parks, the clusters of Oyamazakura here are scattered throughout the pasture, creating a beautiful, unrefined, and natural scenery that captures the essence of the Yamagata highlands.

The primary draw of this spot is the ability to observe wild Oyamazakura blossoms in their natural habitat. Rather than being artificially planted, these trees grow freely across the expansive terrain of the Nishizao Plateau. Because of the higher altitude, the blooming season tends to occur later than in the lower-lying urban areas of Yamagata City, offering a second chance for travelers to see blossoms later in the season.
The best time to visit this area is around late April. Due to the elevation of 600m, the blooming period is delayed compared to the city center. In many years, you can enjoy the sight of the cherry blossoms through the beginning of Golden Week (early May). It is highly recommended to check local weather and blooming reports before your visit.
The Nishizao Plateau area is surrounded by various scenic spots. If you are exploring Yamagata, you might also enjoy visiting Kajo Park in Yamagata City or Tsukioka Park (near Kajo Castle) in Kanzaki, both of which are famous for their cherry blossom displays.
