Shasui Falls is a breathtaking scenic spot located in Yamakita Town, Ashigarakami District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Flowing from the Takizawa River, a tributary of the Sakawa River, this waterfall is celebrated as one of the 'Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan' and 'Top 100 Best Waters,' a testament to its incredible purity and scenic beauty. The name 'Shasui' is derived from a Buddhist term referring to pure, sacred water, highlighting its long-standing history as a spiritual site. The falls are composed of three distinct tiers: the first tier (69m drop), the second tier (16m drop), and the third tier (29m drop), each offering a unique and powerful expression of nature.
The area holds deep spiritual significance; it is said that the famous monk Mongaku performed rigorous 100-day ascetic training (waterfall meditation) here during the Kamakura period. Near the falls lies the 'Takifudo-son' (Ana-fudo), a deity enshrined by Monk Mongaku, making this a site of long-standing faith. Every year on the fourth Sunday of July, the 'Shasui Falls Festival' is held. This traditional event features performances of the Shasui Taiko drums and a fire festival at the Takifudo-son shrine, deeply rooted in the local community's prayers for health and well-being.
The most iconic view is looking up at the powerful cascade from the vermilion bridge. The first tier, with its massive 69-meter drop, provides a stunning visual sense of coolness against the deep green forest. While visitors are currently restricted from descending to the base of the falls for safety, the newly developed walking paths and observation terraces allow you to experience the full scale and power of the falls up close. To the left of the falls, historical stone monuments stand as a testament to the fusion of nature and culture.
You can enjoy the changing beauty of the seasons throughout the year. From spring to summer, the vibrant fresh greenery creates a striking contrast with the white cascading water, offering a refreshing atmosphere. During the hot summer months, the area is a perfect spot to feel the 'negative ions' and a natural sense of coolness. In autumn, the landscape is painted with colorful foliage, and in winter, the falls can be seen under a serene blanket of snow.
The area features the 'Kawamura Castle Ruins & Shasui Falls Hiking Course,' allowing visitors to walk through the heart of nature. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll using the well-maintained paths and stairs. The observation terrace is an ideal place to pause, listen to the rhythmic sound of the water, and immerse yourself in the tranquil environment.
The surrounding area is a lush forest environment, making it an excellent destination for nature observation and hiking. Since Yamakita Town is dotted with various historical scenic spots, you can easily combine a visit to the falls with a broader cultural and historical sightseeing route.
