Saikoku-ji is a prominent temple of the Shingon Shoshin Daigo-shu sect located in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Its scale is so vast that it has been referred to as the 'Greatest Temple in Saigoku,' boasting a profound sense of history and prestige within the Onomichi area. Legend has it that the temple was founded by the monk Gyoki during the Tenpyo era (729–749), and the serene atmosphere of the grounds leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. The temple grounds are filled with traditional Japanese architectural beauty, such as the Kon-do Hall and the three-story pagoda, both designated as Important Cultural Properties, as well as the unique Nio-mon Gate.
The history of this temple is exceptionally ancient. It is said to have been founded after the monk Gyoki experienced a divine vision of the deity Kamo Myojin. Throughout its history, the temple has been rebuilt several times, including by the decree of Emperor Shirakawa, and during the Heian period, it flourished as a major center with over 100 subordinate temples. Although it faced hardships such as fires during the Nanboku-cho period, it was consistently restored by powerful local lords and rulers. The current Kon-do Hall was built in 1386 by the Yamana clan, the powerful governors of Bango Province, and preserves the architectural style of the Muromachi period. Additionally, the three-story pagoda, donated by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori, stands as a significant cultural heritage that tells the story of Japan's shifting eras.
Saikoku-ji offers many precious cultural assets. The first striking sight is the 'Nio-mon Gate,' built in the early Edo period. It features a highly unusual sight: a pair of massive straw sandals (waraji) approximately 2 meters in height hanging from the gate. Next is the 'Kon-do Hall,' a designated Important Cultural Property. It maintains a powerful Muromachi-period architectural style and houses a wooden statue of Yakushi Nyorai (a hidden Buddha) believed to date from the late Heian period. The three-story pagoda, a gift from Ashikaga Yoshinori, is another essential part of the historical landscape. Furthermore, the temple preserves many historical artifacts and precious Buddhist ritual tools dating from the Tang and Kamakura periods, offering deep insight into Japanese Buddhist culture.
Saikoku-ji reveals different faces depending on the season. In spring, the corridors leading past the Nio-mon Gate are beautifully framed by blooming cherry blossoms, creating a harmonious scene of nature and ancient architecture. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is ideal for observing the intricate architectural details and the giant straw sandals. As evening approaches, the atmosphere becomes more tranquil and meditative. Depending on the season, specific ceremonies such as Goma fire rituals may be held, providing a deeper spiritual experience if you time your visit accordingly.
Beyond sightseeing, Saikoku-ji offers various traditional Japanese spiritual practices. You can request specific prayers (Goma Kito) for various needs, such as blessings for childbirth, safe travel (strong legs), family safety, or academic success. These rituals often involve the use of sacred fire to convey wishes. Please note that these may require prior consultation or reservations. Additionally, receiving a Goshuin (temple stamp/calligraphy) is a significant part of the visit. Collecting Goshuin from various sacred sites allows you to keep a record of your pilgrimage and offers a direct connection to Japanese spiritual culture.
Saikoku-ji is an integral part of the historic streetscape of Onomichi. The area is rich in other pilgrimage sites, such as the Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and the Chugoku 49 Kannon Pilgrimage. For example, the nearby Senko-ji Temple is a famous spot for enjoying the scenic views of Onomichi.
