Saikazaki is a stunning cape located in the southwestern part of Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. Situated within a special area of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, the sight of houses nestled along the surrounding hills has earned it the nickname 'The Amalfi of Japan.' From the Saikasaki Lighthouse standing atop the cliffs, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kii Channel, Tomogashima Island, Awaji Island, and even as far as Shikoku. The area is also famous for its vibrant fishing culture; at the Saikazaki Fishing Port, lively markets are held where you can purchase incredibly fresh seafood directly from the fishing boats.
This beautiful area has a long history, with its name 'Saika no Ura' even appearing in the ancient poetry collection Man'yoshu. During the Muromachi period, it became a settled area for many fishermen due to the thriving net fishing industry. In the Edo period, the cape served as a strategic point for the Kii Domain, with coastal batteries (artillery positions) established at 'Bangosono-hana' and 'Tonga-no-hana.' Today, the lighthouse and the remains of the Saikazaki Daiba (a Wakayama Prefectural Monument) stand as testaments to the region's historical significance.
There are several unique spots to explore in Saikazaki. The Saikasaki Lighthouse is a must-visit, featuring an observation deck that offers sweeping views of the Kii Channel and surrounding islands. For history enthusiasts, the Bango Garden at Bangosono-hana and the Saikazaki Daiba (remnants of Edo-period artillery sites) provide a deep sense of the past. A truly unique experience is the direct-from-boat sales at the fishing port, where you can buy fresh seafood right from the source. These elements—nature, history, and the local fishing culture—combine to create the unique atmosphere of this region.
Saikazaki reveals a different face depending on the time of day. It is particularly famous as a premier sunset spot, offering breathtaking views of the sun dipping into the Kii Channel. The seafood markets at the fishing port also follow seasonal schedules. Generally, from mid-October (Sports Day) to mid-May, markets tend to start around 3:00 PM. From mid-May to the October Sports Day, they typically start around 7:00 PM. Please note that these times are subject to change based on weather and fishing conditions, so it is wise to check locally. The coastal scenery and lighthouse views are beautiful throughout the year.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences centered around nature and food. At the fishing port, you can experience the excitement of buying fresh seafood directly from the boats. For a more casual activity, the 'Saikazaki Sea Park' offers 'Choi-tsuri' (easy fishing), a beginner-friendly fishing experience that does not require a reservation or your own equipment. Additionally, the nearby 'cafe Sea Town Diary' (cafe Umimachi Nikki) allows you to enjoy lunch featuring local specialties like Red-legged Shrimp while gazing out at the ocean. It is a perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culinary culture.
The area around Saikazaki is rich with other local attractions. As part of the Wakaura area, you can visit historic sites like Wakaura Tenmangu Shrine, Tamatsushima Shrine, and the beautiful Furo Bridge. For relaxation, 'Seaside Kanshio' offers hot spring baths where you can soak while looking out over the ocean. These nearby spots complement the beauty of Saikazaki and allow for a more extensive sightseeing itinerary.
When visiting Saikazaki, please keep the following in mind. As this is a coastal and cliffside area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to enjoy the fishing activities or the seafood markets, bring clothing suitable for changing weather. Most importantly, please carry CASH, as many of the direct-from-boat seafood sales at the fishing port require cash payments. If you participate in fishing, please bring a cooler box and ice to bring your catch home, as the local culture encourages taking your catch rather than releasing it.
