Overview & Attractions

Saigomodoshinomatsu Park is a hilltop park located in Matsushima Town, Miyagi Prefecture, offering a sweeping view of Matsushima Bay, one of the three most scenic views in Japan. The park is home to a historic, large pine tree and a viewpoint that provides a breathtaking perspective of the many islands floating in Matsushima Bay and the beautiful coastline. A cafe is also located within the park, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing break alongside the stunning scenery.

History & Cultural Background

The name of the park is rooted in a legend involving the famous poet Saigyo Hoshi. It is said that while traveling through various provinces, Saigyo encountered a young boy under this large pine tree and engaged in a Zen Buddhist riddle-solving contest (Zenmondo). Having lost the debate, Saigyo abandoned his journey to Matsushima. This historical connection gives the 'Saigomodoshinomatsu' (the pine that made Saigyo turn back) its name.

Main Highlights

The centerpiece of the park is the observation deck, which offers a wide-angle view of Matsushima Bay. From this high vantage point, you can observe the unique beauty of the many islands (Tashima-bi) that characterize the area. The park is also a famous spot for cherry blossoms; in spring, visitors can witness a breathtaking scene where pink blossoms harmonize with the blue sea and the pine-clad islands.

Seasonal Recommendations & Timing

Visiting during the spring is highly recommended to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The scenery of Matsushima Bay changes beautifully with each season. If you wish to visit the cafe, please note that it is open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but the food menu is only available until 3:00 PM. The cafe is closed on Tuesdays.
