Saigo-ji is a temple of the Ji Pure Land school located in Higashikubo, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is said to have been founded by Yugyo Rokudai Ichizin during the late Kamakura period (around 1332–1333). The temple was formerly known as Saiko-ji. Its most significant features are the Main Hall and the Sanmon (Gate), which are among the oldest surviving examples of Ji Pure Land architecture and are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can immerse themselves in traditional Japanese architectural beauty amidst the serene and tranquil atmosphere of Onomichi.
The history of this temple dates back to the late Kamakura period. The Main Hall was commissioned in 1353 (Bunwa 2), and the Sanmon Gate was constructed during the Joji era (1362–1368). Interestingly, the design of the temple's roof is said to have influenced the design of the Onomichi City Museum of Art, highlighting its deep connection to local culture and art.
